Before cloning, you will need to use Disk Utility to erase the external drive and give it a GUID partition with HFS+ (Journaled) file system. ![]() I would suggest making sure your internal & external drives have unique names so as not to confuse yourself or the installer. ![]() If you see this new test folder on the Desktop after booting to the clone, then you did not boot to the cloned drive.Īfter verifying the external drive boots, then go to the App Store and download the installer and run it as an app from the external drive. To make sure you are actually booting to the cloned external drive rather than the original internal drive, create a new folder on your Desktop after the cloning process has finished. You can then test to make sure the external drive boots properly. I think your best option is to use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your internal drive to the external one. Not all USB sticks work well booting a Mac and some (even name brands USB sticks) can even corrupt the data stored on the USB stick. There is a possibility you have an issue with the USB stick containing the installer. It sounds like you may have finally made a Mojave installer.
